Cardinal Love

Hello Beloved,

I was thinking how interesting it is that cultures the world over attach huge importance to various critters. Cats and owls are associated with witches and the dark arts. Snakes with evil. Black Widow spiders with murder. White elephants with royalty and gifts that you don’t really want. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

A bit closer to home for me is the Cardinal, a beautiful bird with a beautiful voice. My Beloved was very fond of Cardinals. She believed like many in her extended family that the Cardinals represented their loved ones that had passed on. In recent years, my Beloved took the visitation of a Cardinal to be her much loved cousin coming by to say hi. I have heard many stories in a similar vein, people taking comfort in the sight of a Cardinal, believing it to be a sign of greeting from their Beloved who has passed away.

In my yard, male Cardinals are pretty common but not so much for females. This past spring there has been a female Cardinal greeting me just about every day as I leave the house to go to work. I am not convinced that this my Dolly saying good morning to me, but I am slowly getting to the point where I can take comfort in addition to joy at the sight of this female Cardinal.

I have also begun talking to the bird as if it were my Dolly. I fully believe that the communication lines between this world and the next are more open than not. It is comforting to me allow myself to feel warm fuzzies at the sight and sound of this muted red bird. I admit that this is not how I would have chosen for Dolly to connect with me but there is no harm in the comfort I gain from this little bird.

I think the animal kingdom is a good conduit between this world and the next. The biggest problem is that most people in this world are not willing to open themselves to that possibility and they are unable to hear what is being said. That’s OKAY. I am certainly not going to try to persuade someone’s beliefs. At the same time, I will continue to believe what I believe, and I will continue to say good morning to the Cardinals. If this makes me crazy to you, I can live that.

Just like I can live with the fact that I will always believe that animals are way smarter than we know. After all it is us who are unable to understand them, yeah. Think about it, sit, stay, heel. See what I’m saying? Beloved, if you have a pet, give them a hug and tell them you love them. If you don’t have a pet to talk with at least allow others to believe what they believe.

Have a lovely…
