Perspective

Hello Beloved, I was thinking this week about different cultures perceive and deal with similar things. I watch a lot of true crime stuff and documentaries, A LOT. Probably way too much but it is true. I also watch a lot of crime mystery shows, I prefer ones made in the UK or Canada or Australia, basically any place other than the good old USA. Can you guess why? For the most part the shows made by non American companies do not find it necessary to show blood and guts and push the gore into your face.

These other countries seem to think that the viewers are fully capable of filling in the blanks by themselves. American crime shows leave no room for imagination or wondering about how something happened. Now don’t be misunderstanding what I am saying. I will watch a good old American thriller action movie any day of the week. Sometimes I like a kinder, gentler crime if that makes any sense. Tiles like FATHER BROWN and DEATH IN PARADISE will grab my attention every time as will VIN DIESEL and DUANE JOHNSON.

We humans can be such a paradox sometimes, yeah? There is a particular type of show that really causes mto reach for the remote to change channels in a heart beat, that would be anything where an animal gets hurt or killed in a nonsensical manner. I mean really, how is a cat or dog to defend themselves against the hard boot of a heartless human. Perspective, it is all about perspective.

My perspective is that a good story teller can get their point across without the use graphic sex or language. Without pushing blood and guts into the viewers faces. Give the viewers credit for having a brain and understanding something horrible has happened. I have written or am writing several short stories and a novel or two. Sometimes I go back and read what I have written with an eye for this very phenomenon. Usually I don’t end up changing much but every now and then I am disappointed in myself for not giving the reader credit for having a brain of their own.

What is your perspective? Sometimes people, myself included, get so hung up on the minutia that we can loose track of the point of what we are reading or watching or writing. We need to be willing to allow others to have their own opinions and perspectives. If the work is truly worthwhile it will hold up to the scrutiny. We are often our own harshest critics. Trust your guts, your perspective. If the product is worth your attention, give it. If it is not, allow others to disagree with you.

This world would be a terrible place if everyone were the same and had the same perspective.
Beloved, be blessed and revel in our differences.
